Ah Dewford. Ace liked the Granite Cave. He'd had some good luck with steel types there. Otherwise...there really wasn't much there aside from undersea shenanigans that have since calmed down and beaches. So it surprised him when he saw that a gym had opened up here. And manned by an Elite 4 member at that. While it wasn't unusual, it was uncommon enough. And the five foot four blonde went for it. He opted for an all steel-type team. And while he didn't have much in the way for special attackers, hopefully this combination of Stealth Rock, switch, Sandstorm and Thunder Wave would work in wearing down whatever came at him. He would have loved to use Skarmary, just for more entry hazard stuff, but also didn't want to appear too reliant on them either.

Aaron hadn't heard much about this gym, either as an Elite Four member or leader. Most he's heard was that the guy was the sheriff of Dewford. Three major responsibilities...well, hopefully the guy didn't stretch himself too thin. Reaching the gym and entering it, he was five minutes early. Checking in, he was led out to the battlefield. Seeing the guy, Aaron bowed politely. "Aaron Toral. Pleasure to meet you, sir." His voice was monotone and expressionless. He didn't know what to expect from this latest challenge. But the guy had to be pretty strong to become an elite four member so quickly.

Aaron is led to a plain battle pitch. Four steel walls surround the soulless structure. Only artificial green grass emblazoned with the symbol of the League adds color to the environment. Navy’s already in place, sitting on one of two raised platforms. His is the far side, away from the door. The challenger is afforded a platform of their own, equipped with a sound system so that the gym leader can communicate with them.[break][break]
“Yo.” He says, smoking a cigar. His gym work always makes him feel young, more in touch with the man he was when he first told the League’s higher ups that he’d take the job.[break][break]
Arceus he thinks when he sees Aaron. Just a kid.[break][break]
Many of those who challenge his gym are just a kid. Kids and teenagers, their future, are the ones who most benefit from the education offered by these gyms. He wonders what challenges Aaron has faced in this war-torn region.[break][break]
“Before we start, got a question for you. Why are you taking the gym challenge? Going for champion rank? Just wanna improve your battling skills?”

The older man was much more casual than Aaron in terms of greetings. Before they could get started, the gym leader asked him a question. Oh boy...that was a potentially long answer. Nevertheless, he'd answer it. "There's a few reasons. The first is the champion rank, to prove to my parents that I can very much take care of myself. The second is that I do aspire to becoming a gym leader myself one day. Much like my friend Hideo Kino. I imgaine doing well during the challenge will look good in towards that end. And lastly, doing well on it will maybe force the League into leaving me be when I try to curbstomp Team Rocket into oblivion." And maybe some League members, too, since the higher ups are too short sighted and/or cowardly to throw their own troublemakers into a dungeon and throwing away the keys. But Ace didn't say that. Particularly since the main troublemaker was this guy's colleague on the Elite Four, and he didn't know what Michael's opinion on that guy was. So best leave that one unsaid.

And so moving on, he awaited the time to release their first Pokemon. Taking out a Pokeball, the kid threw it, revealing Aggron. Who roared in anticipation. Aaron had used him maybe once during the Deep Sea explorations near the Granite Cave, but he had more than earned his worth for regular rotation in competitive or risky situations. He just waited for Gym Leader Navidson's answer.

“Nobody can take on Rocket by themselves, son.” A warning he gave to his own brother once, before he fought his way into an early grave. “Not MATIAS SILPH, not Katherine Fairburne, not me. Only way we can win this war’s together.” It’s a grim sentiment to give a sixteen year old. This war makes adults out of children far before their time.[break][break]
“That said…if you wanna help, nobody’ll tell a Champion rank trainer no, especially if you go through proper channels.” Talking, Navy knows, will not avail them. Aaron has something to prove. Navy is the last obstacle standing between him and a run for Ever Grande.[break][break]
Let him play the role of a dragon, then. Let him test this young man’s resolve. Unclipping a pokeball from his belt, he allows his Flygon to fly free, emerging in a flash of crimson. Tanwyn cries, levitating off the ground. A press of a button sends the battle pitch sinking into the darkness.[break][break]
Tanwyn slams herself full force into the ground, making the whole chamber tremble. That the descending battle-elevator can withstand the earthquake serves as a testament to League engineering. She levitates up the shaft, aiming to stay out of Aggron’s range.[break][break]
“You been on a real battlefield before, Aaron?” He does not ask the question to condescend or mock. Given Aaron’s age, Navy knows the answer he wants to hear. “Rocket doesn’t play fair. What d’you do in this situation?”

"You won't get any agruement from me on that point, sir. I don't like being told to go away and retreat from the area when they clearly need all the help they can get." Though Aaron did visible flinch at the mention of the colossal asshole and liability (at least to him) that was Matias. That being said, he fully agreed with that sentiment. It just...seemed like the League should be able to do better. With that, the battle was afoot. Ace mirrored his adversary, taking out a Pokeball and throwing it. Aggron revealed himself with a heavy thud and a focused gaze. Originally not a calm Pokemon, Ace had worked with it to the bone. Flygon was going to be a challenge...but Ace had an idea.

The Gym Leader made the first move with a double super effective strike. "Jump, then use Stealth Rock." The metal beast ran forward, showing a bit more nimbleness than typical of Aggron. With a running jump, the beast curled into a ball, and used his tail as a spring board for a larger jump to avoid the Earthquake. Whil still unable to really touch the Flygon, the Aggron sent out rocks that would hover and stay within striking distance of any new Pokemon that Michael would send out. Even with the battlefield going deeper underground. It was the main step in his plan, and originally he would switch to Kingklang to set up Sandstorm. But the use of a Flygon made that idea pretty much useless. Metagross it was.

Taking out two Pokeballs, one to return Aggron and the other to release his meteor, the blonde stopped as Michael asked a question. It was a pointed question, not to mock him or anything...but there was a reason for it. Sadly, the Gym Leader would have to hear an answer he wouldn't like. "Yes. Both intentionally and not so intentionally. I've encountered two adversaries that might actually give me a full run for my money, all others fled far too quickly or were victims of Rocket's coercion. Or just plain weak, even with a numbers advantage they didn't touch me or my Pokemon." It kind of made him question just how many heavy hitters Rocket had...and if the League was far weaker than anyone knew. All he knew was that Rocket didn't strike fear into him at all.

“Ha!” Any veneer of sternness goes away at the young man’s answer. He misses being young. He misses thinking with the wrong head, thinking he can take on the world. Gabe, Navy’s younger brother, was much the same. He wonders if Aaron holds the same dream Gabe once had – the seat of top champion.[break][break]
After that, Navy decides he likes Aaron. He resolves to do what he can to keep the kid alive if he ever ends up on another battlefield.[break][break]
“Come on down, girl.” Navy shouts up to Tanwyn, who hovers in the air. She takes her time. With laser focus, she settles on a downward trajectory. She dives, descending past most of the stealth rocks. Some scrape at her body, leaving marks, but the injury is passing.[break][break]
“Tell me something, kid.” The question is asked through an ear-splitting, gregarious smile. “Which two d’you think are their big hitters?” It is so rare for him to get to talk about his favorite subject – his enemies.[break][break]

Flygon used Laser Focus to avoid the Stealth Rocks, not that they were really meant for it. Blonde eyebrows furrowed...didn't that also enhance something else? The sheriff gave him an almost creappy smile as he asked about their big hitters. Of course he would...the two that he didn't have hardly anything on. "I don't have much. Some lady that used a Seviper and then escaped after I knocked it out. Lack of light in a cave. Some guy in a black suit and mask that used a Zarude...injured as well. Nothing to really identify them on. I did see in the Littleroot invasion that someone of their's unleashed a Xerneas, but I wasn't close enough to be of some help on that one." He wasn't much help on identifying people that took good care in not being recognized.

So, with that bit of conversation over, he returned Aggron, and tossed out Metagross. The large meteor also landed with a thud and a groan. "Magnet Rise." With a small spark of electricity, the iron giant started to float and hover. If that Flygon wanted an aerial battle, it'll get one. He did wish he'd taught it Ice Punch, but he also didn't expect to take on so many Flygon from gym leaders either. Well, it was only two, but the fact that it happened twice was pretty weird...

“Xerneas, huh?” What Aaron’s answer tells Navy is that he has not, in fact, faced some of Rocket’s heaviest hitters. He would remember them, and he would know some of their signature Pokemon. Zarude makes him think of Tempest Quinn, who tried to destroy his gym with one of the green monkeys.[break][break]
“Count yourself lucky. You nearly ran into bryan delarosa. He’s one of their best – even if he doesn’t bring out Xerneas.” But he supposes there isn’t much room to discuss it more now.[break][break]
For now, it’s time to give this would-be champion a taste of how dirty Rocket can be. Their descending battle pitch finally clears the elevator shaft. Beneath them is a vast battlefield made from granite. Much of it is obscured by fog and dimmed lighting.[break][break]
Tanwyn, oblivious to the changing scenery, responds to rising Metagross with a dragon claw. It is an exchange that works against her, sending the Flygon onto the backfoot. She does not fight alone. A Salamence appears from the fog below, rising with flames gathering in his maw. The nameless dragon unleashes a flamethrower on the Metagross.[break][break]
“Ever had a Rocket fight dirty?”

The name was familiar enough. "I've never met him, but I know the name. He was a known troublemaker in Littleroot. It's not surprising that he ended up joining Rocket." But lucky? Perhaps it was his arrogance talking, but maybe he was unlucky to not have met their real heavy hitters...or they lucky to have never met him. A legendary was powerful, yes, but any Pokemon can be taken down.

But on to the battle at hand, the Flygon came in with a Dragon Claw. "Meteor Mash." The Metagross rose to the challenge, right arm glowing silver-white, and matching the Dragon Claw. What he did notice was the Stealth Rocks going after something else from the fog. Soon, a Salamence showed up, spewing flames from its mouth at the floating meteor. The X part of his body glowed with psychic energy, firing off an X-shaped Psycho Cut that split the Flamethrower into fourths, and redirecting the flames around the steel beast harmlessly, if a bit close.

Then came Navidson's question. Oh? Now this was a gym that he could appreciate, and the tiny grin on the kid's face would show it. "Not any of significant skill or power." Just weaklings. He'd assume still the three Pokemon limit was in effect. With that in mind, the blonde took out a Pokeball, and sent out Klinklang, opting to go with a supporting Pokemon unstead of brute force.

One of Aaron’s pokeballs is missing. Aggron’s ball is gone, plucked from wherever Aaron keeps his Pokeballs. As their battle pitch finally settles in the true battlefield, a Sneasel grins at the young trainer before disappearing behind a raised barricade of granite. It leaves the trainer with a choice: either pursue into the fog or push on with only two Pokemon. It’s a hard choice, one Navy has given to many trainers before.[break][break]
“Well, get used to it. Rockets fight dirty. They fight to win. They’ll do messed up things and not lose a wink of sleep over it.” Regardless of the choice Aaron makes, his own Pokemon do not make it easy for him. The Salamence, who little notices the pain of the floating stealth rocks even as they make him bleed, scorches the clanging gears.[break][break]
Tanwyn, still reeling from a meteoric hit, rushes off to try and help her fellow dragon. She’s better at playing support than she is being the leading lady. Her claws grasp at the Klingklang, trying to hold it still for the nameless Salamence.[break][break]
“Question is…what’re you gonna do about it? Already taking the right steps.” Navy nods at the second Pokemon, proud of Aaron for throwing it out.

Ace put his finger on Aggron's pokeball, just in case he needed to do a quick switch. Only to find it missing. And seeing the Sneasal to disappear behind a barracade of granite. Not good. In addition the fever pitched battle ahead of him. But Aaron was also quite prepared for theft. Taking out a whistle he normally kept around his neck, he blew into it, letting out a piercing noise that even Pokemon in Pokeballs could hear. That Sneasal was going to have a very angry Aggron bursting out of his ball to contend with. Shame he didn't have any Stealth Rocks at his backside. From his small pack, the little blonde also took out a pair of goggles and a light desert scarf. For an odd reason, any time he had a Pokemon that knew Sandstorm, he kept those two items with him, even in official matches. He was glad he developed that habit here. "I'm well aware. So they shouldn't have any issue when those same tricks or tactics get thrown right back at them. Klinklang, Sandstorm, full blast! Don't worry about the trainers. Metagross, Bullet Punch!"

The gears unleashed a thick Sandstorm, thick enough to block the Flamethrower, but that also delayed the storm's spread to even around the two trainers. It also helped out against the Salamence, buffetting it and whittling it down. Klinklang was held down by the Flygon, but Metagross was soon behind the dragon, doing a well aimed punch at the center of the creature's back. The Sneasal would find it extremely difficult to keep the stolen Pokeball closed as it wiggled and squirmed, the Pokemon inside trying to get out. If successful, the Aggron would have leapt up, and aim an Iron Tail at the sneaky ice type. Aaron ignored the question, hoping his earlier comment, and maybe the Sandstorm expanding well into the trainers' spots, would answer it.

TLDR

Klinklang gets held down by Flygon, but still uses Sandstorm to block a Flamethrower, though it also slowed the storm's expanse into even the trainers' areas.

Aaron produces goggles and a desert scarf to deal with his own Pokemon's Sandstorm.

Metagross uses Bullet Punch on Flygon.

Aggron may or may not burst from their Pokeball and uses Iron Tail on Sneasal.

For a brief moment, Navy wonders if he’s looking at a future Elite Four chairholder, or even a Top Champion.[break][break]
Whatever tomorrow holds, today might well suck for his whole team. Tanwyn is hit by a dazzling punch so fast that her eyes cannot even comprehend she is being punched until the pain is already being processed by a thousand nerves throughout her body. Salamance, equally annoyed by the turn of events, tries to aim a crunch of his mighty fangs at the Metagross.[break][break]
Tanwyn’s shriek if one of outrage. She does not, under ordinary circumstances, allow the dragon rage to consume her. Hit that hard, here within what should be her domain, it does. She thrashes against the metal monster with careless abandon, throwing away courtesy and good sense.[break][break]
Ellie, caught off in the fog, screams in fear. She was not meant to be a fighter. Instead, she flinches at the sound. She does so until the iron tail knocks her out in one good, clean blow.[break][break]
Throwing on a pair of goggles he had prepared for Tanwyn’s own sandstorm, Navy looks out across the field.[break][break]
“Good job, man!” He shouts, although the fight is not yet over.

After the strike against the Flygon, the Salamence moved in to use Crunch on Metagross. "Double-Team." The Sandstorm wasn't as strong as Skarmory's, but it was still helped wonders. Metagross soon turned into six, with one disappearing when the dragon chomped on an arm. "Thunder Wave." Aaron gave his oddly shaped Pokemon the order to take advantage of a hopefully surprised Salamence. Blue electricity surged towards the blue beast in an attempt to paralyze it. It may not stop all the attacks, but it should slow it down enough for them to focus on the green dragon. Speaking of, she thrashed around hard, hitting two fakes that were in range. Already down to half of what he started with. Good part about Outrage was that it often confused the Pokemon afterwards. Worst part of Outrage was surviving it...

Aggron saw the Sneasal hit a wall, hard. After checking to make sure it was alright, used Head Smash to burst through the wall that seperated it from his trainer. Looking around, he saw the storm and the attacks. Instead of joining right on through, he skirted around the edge towards the gym leader. Ace did call out to him though. "This is still an official match, even with funny business allowed. Don't go full mental." Otherwise, Ace would let him do as he pleased. With a nod, he kept moving...

TLDR
Metagross uses Double Team to avoid the Crunch and Outrage, but looses half of his "shadow clones".
Klinklang uses Thunder Wave on Salamence.
Aggron checks on Sneasal, makse sure they're knocked out, but fine otherwise. Then Head Smashes through the wall to reunite with the trainers and battle. Instead of diving head first, decides to skirt the edges towards Navidson.
Ace reminds Aggron about this being an official match, funny business allowed, but to not go rage mode. Otherwise leaves him be.
Also ignores the compliment, cuz the battle ain't over yet.

A Pokemon slips free of its ball, clinging to Navy’s right shoulder and arm. Hattori is a small thing, considered insignificant by most in the grand scheme of things. He is one of Navy’s best Pokemon, hardened by a year of this long war and twenty in Galar. Though he makes no attempt to lunge at Ace or otherwise antagonize the Aggro, his eye settles on the steel goliath.[break][break]
His eye carries a clear message: do not hurt him. Hattori does not interfere, nor does he seem inclined to stop Ace should he make his way back to the duel in the middle of the field.[break][break]
Nameless, the Salamence, is paralyzed. The creature is far from the battle-hardened veterans around him. A young buck, Navy hopes this will be a learning experience for him as well. Some Pokemon need to have their egos checked. As he tries to muster up a flamethrower and can’t, the dragon roars with wounded pride.[break][break]
Tanwyn is lost within her outrage. Her world is a red world. She strikes at shadows, strikes at what she thinks the shadows hide, and feels her claws scrape against what may be metal or granite. Her fury tears apart the arena and the pitch alike. Artificial grass is tossed about with reckless, maddening abandon. She roars, eager to land a hit on the Metagross.[break][break]
The fight is turning against him, and Navy is glad to see it. Frankly, he could call the match now, but he would not deprive Aaron of a memorable final match. Everyone deserves to win their sixth badge in style.

Flygon continues to outrage. Salamence is paralyzed. Greninja pops out of a pokeball and mean mugs Aggron. I'm committing time theft at work so I can't put the Greninja among my mons but he's not relevant unless Aggron gets quirky.
